A few weeks ago I wrote about my ever growing list of projects I wanted to tackle around our home and my need to prioritise to get them all done. You will be very pleased to know I have finally put a tick next to an item! Yes, I have actually completed one of the projects from my list; although now its done I want to extend it a little and paint some more. Let me explain…
Our outdoor drinks fridge and chest freezer were ugly. They looked like this:

A little old and rusty-still completely serviceable but not very pretty. I came across a fridge on the internets which had been painted with blackboard paint and voila, I knew what to do to ours! The benefits were twofold, I could pretty up these two appliances AND give the kiddies somewhere to draw outside. So I popped down to Mitre 10 (we are total The Block addicts so have given bunnings the flick and are all about Mitre 10!!!!) to grab some blackboard paint. They only had spray cans in the black so I grabbed one and headed home to paint.

The can informed me I should prep the surface with some primer but I decided to risk it and paint away! You need to do 2 coats of the paint…the 1 can only did 1 coat of both fronts. This is the first coat:

After having a break of nearly 2 weeks between coats (it’s very hard work spray painting…ummmm, NOT!) I finally got my second can and whilst waiting for hubby to come and jump start my car for me yesterday after a small person flattened my battery I decided I would make good use of my time and rather than play on FB and the like I did the second coat. This can went much further as the coat didn’t need to be so thick so I painted the top of the chest freezer too. Now the fronts are both painted the sides look very sad…I’ve decide I’m going to paint them too but I don’t know whether to stick with the blackboard, just do normal black paint or brighten them up a bit with a cool pop of colour. Thoughts???? Anyways, this is the end result:

well after second coat last night…this is the dry, ready to use version:

And before you comment about the lovely shade of terracotta the wall behind them is, repainting that is on my list of things to ask the landlord permission to do!

What a great idea, Liz! I didn’t even know that you could get blackboard paint in a spray can.
Personally, I would go for something bright and high gloss for the sides – hot pink, turquoise, lime green, terracotta – something like that
I can’t wait to see what you decide!
I was thinking an aqua or turquoise so you might be on to something there! x
Bright colours on the sides! Maybe a neon pink……..
That is incredibly neat! Paint makes all the different. How creative!
